Brief History of UT
The University of Texas at Austin is the flagship school of the UT system. It was founded in 1883 and is one of the largest single-campus universities by enrollment in the country. The university’s athletic programs compete in the Big 12 Conference, previously participating in the Southwest Conference.
Football
The Texas Longhorns football team is one of the most storied programs in the country since their first season in 1893. Texas has won four national championships, most recently in 2005. The Longhorns have also won 32 conference titles, has two Heisman trophy winners, and is second all-time in total college football wins. The Texas Longhorns have been led by legendary coaches like Dana Bible, Darrell Royal and Mack Brown throughout their history and will continue to be the focal point of the state of Texas
Texas plays its home games at Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium, which has a stadium capacity of over 100,000 and has been home to some of the most memorable college football games in history.
Basketball
The Texas Longhorns basketball team has competed every season since 1906, compiling 25+ regular-season conference championships and three trips to the Final Four. Rick Barnes is the current head coach, starting his tenure in 1998. Players like LaMarcus Aldrige and NBA MVP Kevin Durant are Texas basketball alum, and the Horns continue to bring a solid team to the mix every season.
Since 1977, the Texas basketball team has played its home games at the Frank Erwin Center, which has a capacity of 16,540.
Baseball
The most successful of the “major” sports, the Texas Longhorns baseball team is one of the country’s best. Texas has won six national championships and has appeared at the College World Series a record 35 times. The Longhorns are also the most successful Division-1 baseball team by winning percentage. Texas is coached by the legendary Augie Garrido is the Texas head coach, who is also the most successful head coach in college baseball history.
Other Sports
Texas has a wide variety of varsity sports that also includes cross country, golf, swimming and diving, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track for men. On the women’s side, they have basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, and indoor and outdoor track.
Texas was selected as America’s Best Sports College by Sports Illustrated, and the Texas brand reaches far outside of the Austin City Limits.
